The top 10 cars that Americans hate

The top 10 cars that Americans hate

By Jacqueline Mitchell
updated 12:28 p.m. ET Nov. 2, 2008

Times are so difficult for the auto industry that even Toyota and Honda have now experienced the kinds of double-digit sales dips that have been plaguing American auto giants General Motors and Ford all year. Sales for the entire industry were down 26.6 percent collectively in September as consumers grew skittish about making big-ticket purchases.

In good economic times and bad alike, however, there are some vehicles that American consumers seem to abhor outright. And they're not just the big, gas-guzzling SUVs that are currently out of favor. It turns out, the cars American consumers hate the most come in many different shapes and sizes, and they're disliked for a wide array of reasons.

"Buyers make the same choices and buy the safe brand," says Jessica Caldwell, manager of pricing and industry analysis at Edmunds.com, an automotive consumer information Web site. "They are not thinking outside the box and buying something that may stand out as an odd purchase."

Financing Tips

You should now be ready to go out and get a great financing deal. Just remember these important tips:

* The best strategy for finding a car loan is to shop around. Check out what deals are offered in the marketplace (rebates, low financing, etc.) before you decide to buy a specific car.
* Find out your credit score and, if necessary, correct errors at the credit bureaus.
* Compare interest rates at banks and credit unions, and ask about fees and early payoff calculations. When you've found the best outside loan, apply and get preapproved. Then visit the car dealer with a check in hand to cover the purchase price of the car, plus any sales tax and registration fees.
* Don't be afraid to investigate dealer financing and automakers' captive finance companies to see if they're offering lower interest rate incentives. But whatever you do, says Susan Tiffany of the Credit Union National Association, "don't buy a car just because somebody's offering a deal on it. Make sure you like the car."
* Be careful in the financing and insurance, or F&I, office at the dealership. Don't be afraid to turn down last-minute add-ons like extended warranties. Understand all the details of the contract before you sign. Don't rush through the process.
* If you realize after the fact that you've gotten a bad financing deal, remember that you can always refinance. But if you do, refinance only the remainder of your term, and not its full original length.

Review of 2008 BMW X3-Series Styling

STYLING
The 2008 BMW X3 is BMW’s compact crossover. Derived from the 3-Series lineup, it’s a four-door with a wagon back, a taller ride height, and all-wheel drive. It’s built in South Carolina, and it takes on the likes of the Acura RDX and the Land Rover LR2 as BMW’s entry-level off-roader.

Edmunds says the X3 has an “athletic personality” and notes “this crossover sport-ute shares its platform DNA with BMW's perpetually praised compact sport sedan.” Cars.com notes “the styling clearly says BMW, but it's the multi-paneled look of earlier models and it's beginning to show its age.” They add that the X3 is slightly shorter than its prime competition, the Acura RDX. Motor Trend refers to the “freshened visual athleticism” that came with a redesign in the 2007 model year; for 2008, there are only a few minor changes. Last year also brought a "new front bumper that frames a new, slightly larger twin-kidney grille," according to MyRide.com, and the grille now has “chrome vertical slats" to match the "chrome strip along the base of the side windows" and new LED taillights, according to Autoblog. Still, compared to brand-new entries from Acura and the coming Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLK, the BMW X3 is “aging,” Cars.com suggests.

Inside, "the cabin of the X3 is well thought out and beautifully executed," says Edmunds, adding “function takes priority over opulence.” MSN Autos calls it “quiet, airy and upscale.” This BMW 2008 model "masks its compact dimensions well," says Cars.com, especially due to the telescoping steering wheel and power adjustment driver's seat. "Dark ash wood trim is now standard," but you can also get gray poplar or light natural poplar at no extra cost on the BMW X3, according to MyRide.com. The new "three-spoke steering wheel" and "the new look around the gauge cluster with the instrument hood integrated into the dash" are noteworthy style choices on the BMW X3.

Conclusion
The 2008 BMW X3 bears all the hallmarks of BMW styling, but it’s beginning to show its age.
